Title / Titel Sense of agency, empathy and schizophrenia
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Sense of Agency und empathische Fähigkeiten bei Menschen mit Schizophrenieerkrankung
Summary / Zusammenfassung The initial point for our research is a component- model of empathy which encompasses, besides empathic resonance and perspective taking, the sense of agency as a third component. Several studies from the field of developmental psychology have shown that the sense of agency develops around the age of two years, concomitant with the development of a self-concept (Bischof-Köhler, 1989). This component is especially important because it can be severely disturbed, as in the case of schizophrenia. Symptoms like passivity experiences or delusions of control, which are typical of schizophrenia, point to impairments of the sense of agency in this population. Our goal is to study the sense of agency in conjunction with theory of mind and resonance paradigms to gain a completed picture of empathic abilities in people with schizophrenia, and to find out if these deficits add something to the eluciadation of the etiology of schizophrenia.
