| Summary / Zusammenfassung | This project expands current frameworks for explaining irrational behavior by addressing processes preceding the actual making of a choice. Previously, all major research traditions have focused on decisions between existing options for action. In contrast, we suggest that in ill-constrained real world situations, options for action have to be actively generated by the agent. We propose that dysfunctions in this process lead to specific forms of irrational behavior. In this project we will first focus on the basic concepts and mechanisms underlying option generation. Second, we will provide conceptual and empirical support for the claim that both everyday action failures and psychopathologic symptoms can be addressed within this framework. In both contexts, specific forms of irrational action could then be understood as resulting from variations in the quantity and quality of generated options. | ||||||
