| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The "divorced father" project seeks to investigate how various groups of men cope with divorce, of what sort of support and networks they avail themselves, and what are the consequences for their health. The situation of divorced fathers with different ways of life is analysed with respect to social support, social stress, kind of fathering and health and compared to the situation of married fathers. A sample of 357 divorced fathers without custody and 131 married fathers was selected by the courts of Zurich and Winterthur and interviewed Empirical results: Divorced fathers even several years after the divorce suffer more from physical and psychic troubles than married fathers. Different ways of life after the divorce have a direct as well as an indirect influence via secondary networks on coping with social strain. A new partnership often goes hand in hand with an extended social network and contributes to subjective well-being and satisfaction with the situation. The social stress of divorced fathers living with a new partner is similar to that of the other categories of divorced fathers, but the social support they receive is higher and corresponds more to that of married fathers. |
