Title / Titel Evaluation of information processing in reading task between Japanese Kanji (morphograms) and Kana (syllabograms) with microstate analysis
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung We studied an event-related potential (ERP) topography change on reading of Japanese Kanji (morphograms) words and Kana (syllabograms) words using microstate analysis. Eighteen Japanese female healthy subjects participated in our experiment after having given their written informed consent. The brain electric data were recorded from 39 locations of the 10/10 system during Kanji/Kana presentation at a pseudo-random sequence for 50 ms in either the left visual field (LVF) or right visual field (RVF) at intervals of 2000 ms. After recording, ERPs were computed separately for Kanji/Kana words and the two visual fields. Space-oriented segmentation of the mean map series across words and both visual field stimulation identified 8 consecutive different microstates. ERP microstate topography was reduced to electric gravity center of positive and negative centroids, so that the spatial configuration of a microstate map was described by two coordinate values. During early ERP microstates, 122-178 ms and 214-262 ms after stimulus presentation, and independent of the stimulated visual field, the field configuration was altered by Kanji compared to Kana words. These results suggest that
Kanji and Kana are process differently and evaluation between them take place early after stimulus presentation.
