| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) assesses relative cerebral blood flow (CBF) during prefrontal function, and the excellent resolution in time of this technique may be used to investigate short-term CBF changes. Patients with schizophrenia yield decreased frontal CBF during executive functions, and we have recently shown that TCD specifically detects those alterations. However, there are virtually no studies that systematically investigate short-term CBF changes during prefrontal challenge in this patient group. Patients with schizophrenia and age- and gender matched healthy subjects are investigated. Measurements: Mean cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) in both middle and anterior cerebral arteries, while subjects perform the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and the Tower of London. Examining short-term CBF changes under prefrontal activation harbours several important implications: the association of defined cognitive processes with cerebral hemodynamics of defined length, the degree of differently decreased cerebral blood flow in patients with schizophrenia during those time periods, and its link to clinical symptomatology, increased insight into the pathophysiology of normal cerebral metabolism and that of patients with schizophrenia. Further, there is a great potential to stimulate future research, like correlational studies with anatomical findings in schizophrenia or functional findings of smaller brain areas. This project has been carried out with collaboration of the Department of Neurology, University of Zurich. | ||
