| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle reflex has been discussed to reflect an intermediate phenotype marker of sensorimotor gating in schizophrenia. Moreover, deficits in PPI were found to correlate with attentional deficits (Ludewig and Vollenweider, 2002) and thought disturbances in acute schizophrenia (Perry et al. 2000). Low PPI was also found in relatives of schizophrenia patients without manifestation of the illness. Moreover, we recently found that about 25% of healthy controls also exhibit low PPI (<30%). Whether healthy subjects with low PPI exhibit cognitive impairments or aberrant brain activation patterns compared to subjects with normal or high PPI is completely unknown. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether normal subjects with low PPI (<30%) show aberrant brain activation patterns during PPI compared to normal subjects with high PPI (>70%) using [H215O]PET. A second is to further investigate the relationship between PPI and cognitive performance (attention, working memory, and executive functions) in normal subjects using the CANATAB test battery. |
