| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is characterized by a constellation of symptoms that reflect a prolonged adverse response to an extremely distressing event. Recent studies suggest that adverse psychological and physical responses in PTSD patients may be associated with various psychophysiological measures such as startle reaction, prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle (PPI), EEG P50-suppression, P200 and/or P300 EEG-ERP evoked potentials as well as heart rate variability (HRV). However, it remains widely unclear whether the alterations of these psychophysiological measures in PTSD can be linked to specific psychopathological indices of the disorder. The first aim of the study is to characterise PTSD patients by assesing a wide range of psychophysiological parameters namely startle response, PPI, P50-suppression, P200 AEP, P300 in the oddball-paradigm and HRV. These parameters have never been assessed together in the same subjects under investigation. A second aim is the elucidation of the relationship between specific symptoms, severity and duration of PTSD, as rated by the state of the the art diagnostic rating scales, and psycho-physiological parameters. It seems likely that certain psychophysiological alterations in PTSD patients exist only in a subset of patients associated with a specific pattern of symptoms. |
