| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic relapsing disease, resulting in multiple episodes of mania or depression, and there is evidence that sociodemographic variables such as duration of illness are related to the clinical course of the illness. Our group has recently published two detailed reports on admission status, adherence and pharmacotherapy in BD (Schuepbach et al., 2006; Schuepbach et al., in press). Diverse samples of BD patients will be cross-sectionally and longitudinally investigated with an emphasis on early vs. late phase of BD with the best possible matching between groups. An exploratory approach will cross-sectionally examine shared and different features between groups, including clinical, functional and therapeutic parameters. Further, a selected sample will be longitudinally investigated, using a two-point design (baseline vs. visit at 12 weeks) to estimate hospitalization dependent parameters. Using a priori knowledge on duration of illness and other variables on severity of BD, emerging patterns of psychosocial functioning, treatment and treatment response of the exploratory phase will undergo refined analyses to confirm or reject the notion that BD is psychosocially destructive/has a deteriorating outcome. | ||||
