Title / Titel Functional aspects of spinal cord and brain lesions, regeneration and plasticity
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung After a lesion of the CNS such as stroke or spinal cord injury only few injured nerve fibres spontaneously regenerate. This growth inhibition is partly due to the presence of myelin-associated growth inhibiting proteins that can be neutralized e.g. by specific antibodies. Using this approach functional recovery after specific CNS lesions is studied in rodent models. Next to classical behavioral analysis after injury and anatomical reconstructions novel imaging techniques are applied to study plastic effects both in the spinal cord and in the cortex. In addition, we are investigating the role of training and motivation for regeneration and plasticity.
